Tar & Chip

Tar and chip is the workhorse surface for long, low-speed commercial ground: hot liquid asphalt bonded to a bed of clean stone chips, rolled into a tough, textured finish. It costs less than hot-mix paving, hides dirt and imperfections gracefully, and gives long commercial access roads real traction in every season.

What Tar & Chip Includes

A textured stone surface for farms, yards, campgrounds and long approach roads: durable, and more affordable than hot-mix across real distance.

Prepared baseLike any pavement, tar and chip lives on its foundation. Grading and compaction come first.
Hot asphalt binderLiquid asphalt applied evenly across the surface, the glue that holds the stone matrix together.
Clean stone chipsSpread into the binder and rolled in. Stone choice sets the color and character of the finished surface.
Rolled, textured finishA naturally skid-resistant surface that suits farms, equipment yards, campgrounds and long approach roads.

Building a Tar and Chip Lane

A typical tar and chip run is completed in a day once the base is ready. Expect some loose stone in the first weeks as the surface seats, that is normal, and the lane tightens with traffic and warm weather.

When Tar & Chip Is the Right Call

Tar and chip fits agricultural operations, equipment and RV storage, campgrounds, and the long approach roads into commercial property, anywhere hot-mix pricing across the full distance is hard to justify and a natural, textured look suits the setting better than jet-black asphalt. For shorter runs or surfaces that see heavy turning traffic, conventional paving usually serves better, and we will tell you which is which.

Tar & Chip Questions

How long does a tar and chip surface last?

With a sound base and occasional re-chipping of worn areas, many years. Re-application down the road costs far less than repaving.

Is it slippery in winter?

The opposite: the stone texture gives better traction than smooth pavement, and it plows fine with the blade set properly.

Can you choose the stone color?

Within available aggregates, yes. The stone defines how the finished surface reads, and we will show you the options at the estimate.

Can tar and chip go over my existing surface?

Sometimes, if the existing surface is sound and the grade is right. The on-site estimate settles it.

Long Runs, Both States

Most of our tar and chip work sits on the outer edges of Bucks and Burlington Counties, where sites have real acreage to cover, but we build these surfaces anywhere in our service area that the setting calls for one.
